Feel Good Christianity
Hebrews 10:26-29 “26If
we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the
truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27but
only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the
enemies of God. 28Anyone
who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or
three witnesses. 29How
much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled
the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the
covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?”
We all know that the blood of Jesus covers our
sins. The Bible says that our sins are
as far as the east is from the west in God’s eyes. We know that we all fall short of the glory
of God each and everyday, that all our righteousness is as filthy rags. This can lead us in one of two directions in
our daily lives: it can either make us
more conscious of our shortcomings and appreciative of God’s mercy and grace
which draws us to try harder and harder to live a life pleasing to God out of
gratitude for what He did for us through His Son or it can give us the attitude,
I’m saved and I can never be sinless so I’m going to slide through this life on
grace. The second way of thinking is
what this passage of scripture is talking about. Somewhere along the way over the last 2000
years we got the attitude that God’s punishment would be less severe for us who
live in these days of grace. Verse 28
says that the people who lived under the law of Moses and deliberately sinned
died without mercy; actually they were stoned to death. We all think wow, I’m glad I didn’t live in
those times, but verve 29 says how much more severely are we to be punished. In
Matt. chapter 11 and verses 20 through 24 Jesus parapharsingly says a person
who has more revelation will be more severely judged than the person who
doesn’t, and in Luke chapter 12 and verses 47 and 48 says that the person who
knew not right or wrong will be judged less than the person who knew right from
wrong and did wrong anyway. The feel
good Christianity that so many people live today is an insult to the Spirit of grace. These people are saying to Jesus,” I know
that you gave your all to me and in return I give you nothing. I am selfish and I’m just going to take
advantage to this age of grace.” My
prayer for these people is that they open the eyes to their hearts and realize
that their judgment is going to be more severe than those who have never
learned the truth, and that they truly repent and start living for Jesus.
